Donegal Abbey Singers
Welcome to our website
Community Choir
A little bit about us:
We are a community choir based in Co Donegal in the north west of Ireland. As a group we love to sing, and we are open to all ages and nationalities.
The choir is about companionship. We meet weekly on a Thursday evening for rehearsal.
We sing, make friends and support one another through good times and bad. We work really hard at rehearsal to get our parts right, but we do have fun and laughs too. The ability to read music is not essential, just a keen ear and a group voice. For many of us, this is therapy at it's best, It is a good mood boost, not to mention the other health benefits.
What we do:
The Donegal Abbey Singers have long prided ourselves in supporting both community and needy charities through fundraising. At our annual Christmas concert we choose a different charity each year.
A short history
of the choir:
Eileen Carr
The Donegal Abbey Singers was established over 25 years ago by Eileen Carr.
The group was joined early on by members of the Donegal Choral Society, welcoming many new members over the years. The Donegal Abbey Singers has become one of the most well known choirs in South Donegal and beyond.
Eileen has been at the helm and led the choir in many concerts, choral competitions, and choral events, both countrywide and abroad. In 2016, we were the only adult choir from Donegal who performed in the centenary celebration of the 1916 Easter Rising, an historical event in Irish history. The choral performance was conducted by David Brophy and accompanied by the RTE Symphony Orchestra as a massed choir from around the country. It truly was a privilege, and an emotional event, one which is etched in our memories. After the pandemic and return to choral activities, the choir has gone from strength to strength and is still attracting many new members.
What we sing
and
what we do:
We sing a number of genres from stage and movies, popular tunes, modern, Irish, jazz, classical and religious. In February 2011, the choir recorded their first CD and it was an amazing experience. To our delight, copies were sold near and far with many sending the CD to relatives and friends abroad.
Our choir has also collaborated with other choirs for performances. It is always a great opportunity to meet new people with similar interests, so we are always open to invitations!
